Cat Power - The Greatest

A little reassurance. On The Greatest, Charlyn Mary Marshall sings to us that she once wanted to be the greatest...
Cat Power - The Greatest

Born in Atlanta in 1972 to divorced parents, she left high school without a degree to make music. In New York, she met Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn from Two Dollar Guitar, who encouraged her to record and played on her first records. That was in 1994 and definitely a good idea on their part. In 2006, the 7th album "The Greatest" was released with the single of the same name. Relaxed "alternative country" sound with ingratiating piano and drums and of course her present, serious and smoky voice. Warmth flows around you and you relax.

Here first in a live version...

I wanted to add this song to the list for a long time, because whenever it appeared in my playlist and was playing at home, I thought it would be the next song I would briefly introduce here. As always, it took a little longer 🙁

And here on Spotify. Listening to the Sound Furniture by The Beauty of Sound warms the heart and the sound is captivating with its transparency and balance.

The whole album is very good and it's definitely worth taking a detour to Cat Power's other albums, especially their debut album (I've always been a fan of debut albums) Moon Pix. It sounds very different but also very good and the single "You got the Silver", a Rolling Stones cover version (from 2016) released in 2022, also puts you in a good mood.

And a live version by Keith Richards of You got the Silver, because it's such a great performance.
