Pulp - This is hardcore

A big band sound backing a porn shoot. Who comes up with something like that? In the midst of songs about growing old, panic attacks and addiction, you find yourself in the swan song of Britpop.
Pulp - This is Hardcore - Cover

The Big Band Sound dates from 1966 and is by Peter Thomas, a German film composer who became known to the general public through his arrangements for Jerry Cotten and Edgar Wallace films. He also composed soundtracks for "Derrick", "Der Alte" and many other films such as "Winnetou and Old Firehand". In "This is Hardcore" Pulp uses a sample from "Bolero on the Moon Rocks" from the soundtrack of the series "Raumpatrouille".

Although the main theme of the song is pornography, the director of the music video, Doug Nichol, has re-filmed scenes from film noir movies of the 60s and 70s with the band members, among others.

Pulp is a Brit pop band founded by the shy, lanky and thick-glasses-wearing Jarvis Cocker. The history of the band can be seen in the following video "Pulp: A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets". Of the four studio albums, "This is Hardcore" is the third and actually belongs to the band's late work at the end of the Brit Pop hype. The hits, such as Common People, should be familiar to everyone. As always, I like the drama on "This is Hardcore". I'm a big fan of the drama 😉
