Uruguay is the smallest Spanish-speaking country. I was there briefly in 1994 to visit the waterfalls of Iguazu and unfortunately missed a visit to Montevideo. Uruguay is one of the most stable democracies in South America and also one of the most prosperous countries in the region. It established its "permanent and active unarmed neutrality" in 1983 and is also known as the "Switzerland of Central America". Its 5.1 million inhabitants live in an area half the size of Germany.
Die Uruguayer:innen hören gerne Rockmusik. Eine populäre Rockband Uruguays heisst La Vela Puerca. Sie ist auch in Deutschland bekannt geworden, weil sie in Deutschland als Vorgruppe für „Die Ärzte“ fungierte (und umgekehrt in Südamerika)
Insgesamt bekannter ist allerdings „No Te Va Gustar“. Sie füllt in Uruguay auch die grossen Stadien und erreichen auf Spotify auch schon mal Streaming Zahlen von mehr als 100 Mio. abrufe.
