Billie Eilish – Not my Responsibility
Billie Eilish, the most-streamed female artist of the last two years. One might wonder if this is becoming completely mainstream among the recommendations, but Billie Eilish is one of the current artists who truly stands out.
Following her debut album «When we all fall asleep», which was shaped by the experiences of her teenage years, Billie Eilish presents an album with her new release «Happier than ever» that is nourished by her experiences as a now successful musician. While she is no longer pursued by teenage problems, she has to deal with her popularity. As a "new star," she obviously has to contend with all sorts of comments about her person, her appearance, her body, her private life, etc. In the song «Not my responsibility,» she processes these external opinions regarding her body and her clothing and simultaneously emancipates herself from them.
A whispered and sparsely instrumented accusation against the superficiality and appropriation of our world, and one of the themes that has always moved me concerning artists. Must artists shine through their work, or must they also be perfect in all other areas of life? Perfect body, perfect knowledge in all subject areas so that they can give slick PR statements in talk shows, and perfect taste (which, as is well known, cannot be disputed). We should primarily expect their work from artists. The wild and inexplicable, which is missing in our normal lives, the artist (in all of us) is allowed to live out.
The video appeared on YouTube even before the album release and has been viewed over 30 million times. One can only hope that the message has been received. As always, there is much more to learn about one of the most important musicians of our time. In the magnificent documentary film "The World’s A Little Blurry" on Apple TV+, you get really close to her. Filming is said to have already begun when Billie was 15 years old. You can watch her and her brother making music and learn about an unhappy love for a rapper, etc... Allowing the public to get so close is always a double-edged sword, but if someone doesn't like something or has different expectations, then it is not Billie Eilish's responsibility.
